The Force Awakens HERE IS our Star Wars (SPOILER FILLED) PODCAST

By the time of this blog has posted The Force Awakens has passed Avatar as the new US Box Office Champion of All-Time.    Avatar made 760 Million in Domestic Box Office (I still can’t understand how that movie did so well)   As I wrote this blog on Tuesday 5th The Force Awakens had already grossed about 750 Million in the U.S. and was still averaging about 8 Million a day on Monday.

And I’ve listened to at least a half a dozen podcasts on the subject myself.   I find it interesting listening to some people that have seen the film 5 times and yet say it is a 8 out of 10….(Then why did you see it 5 times).   Any movie that I’m willing to see at least 3 times in the theater is a 10 out of 10 for me.   It can have flaws and things that you pick at –but if it compelled you to see it multiple times –how can it be anything less than a 10

The Cast:    The Cast was excellent:    Especially Harrison Ford returning as Han Solo.  He stepped right back into the role and I didn’t doubt for a second that Han would be any different.   
I absolutely loved every scene he was in……(okay except for one scene –that really hurt).  John Boyega was excellent,  Oscar Issacs –needs a bigger role in the next episode….and Daisy Ridley was out of this world good as Rey.

The visuals and John Williams soundtrack draw you back into the  look and feel of the original trilogy –which has obviously struck a cord with all of the fans.  The movie wisely makes use of familiar Star Wars Themes and gives them a new twist and setting. 

Anyone that was questioning Disney’s purchase of Star Wars and looking on it with concern should now feel great about the future of the franchise.   Star Wars is no longer just a franchise –it is basically its own genre now.    I can’t wait until the film comes on DVD.  I can’t wait until the themed land goes in at Disneyland (watch out Potter).  And Rogue One is less than a year away.

Escape from Tomorrow a Movie Review: The controversial film secretly filmed in the Disney parks: (Podcast included that discusses the film and other things Disney)

This strange movie came up during a discussion of films in the Geek Podcast I'm involved with.   I’m the big Disney fan of the group and was the only one that hadn’t seen it yet….So that and the Disney parks in general became the topic of our Podcast.

Escape from Tomorrow    7 out of 10 

The movie was secretly filmed at and in the Disney Resorts without Disney’s okay.   Disney choose not to bring action against the filmmakers, because they didn’t want to bring more attention to the film.  I believe this was a smart decision.  
So is this movie worth watching as a fan of Disney??? 
 I'll try to answer that question.

The plot of the movie is very strange:   It follows a family man on his last day of his family vacation to Disneyworld.     He wakes up to a phone call where he has been fired from his job…Needless to say he spends his day very distracted.    He is mesmerized by two young French girls (which is very creepy) and spends the day at the parks following the girls around with his son in tow.  He also seems to be having strange hallucinations where he sees evil faces on the dolls of the Small World. 

At one point his son gets sick after he makes him go on Space Mountain as he creepily follows these girls around.   The mom takes the son back to the hotel.   The dad takes the daughter around the park for awhile and then ends up hooking up with a strange women he meets on a bench.  The dad’s character is completely beyone redemption  at this point in the movie.  What the Bleep is he thinking?    The family meets back up at the hotel pool –where more creepy behavior by the dad happens.    They head back to the Epcot and more strangeness happens as the dad tries to drink his stress away.   The mom eventually starts acting strange as well and after getting angry at the daughter ends up heading back to the hotel again.  Now the film really goes into strange zone as the dad loses the daughter and ends up taken to some strange underground lab inside Spaceship Earth.      There is an even stranger ending to the film that leaves you wondering what was real and what wasn’t .   It would probably have given a 6 out of 10 ---but the fact that they had the balls to film in the parks –it gets a 7 out of 10.

 

The Disney Footage:

As a huge Disney fan I was expecting to just be upset by the film that was shot in the parks without permission.   That is probably why I hadn’t seen it before.  That ended up not bothering me. 

What did bug me was seeing footage that was supposed to be at Disneyworld ---that I knew was shot in Disneyland.    Watching the dad sitting at a bench with the Nemo Subs behind him while watching his daughter play in a completely different part of the park took me completely out of the film.  Instead of following the story –I was thinking about which park they were in every time I saw Disneyland on the screen –knowing they were supposed to be in Disneyworld.

My favorite part of the movie was the part with the secret underground lab under Spaceship Earth –that brief part of the story was interesting and could have lead down a much more interesting path along the lines of the movie Tomorrowland.

Other than the comment about Disney Princesses being high paid call girls for Japanese businessmen…the film really wasn’t negative towards Disney.  The Disney parks were really just the setting for the strange movie.  

The Verdict

So is it worth watching as Disney Fan? 

 For an adult Disney fan….Yes I think it is worth giving a watch if only for the rare footage of a movie being filmed in the parks.  The only filming you get to ever see inside the parks is on a random ABC TV show during sweeps week.

For younger Disney fans:   Skip it.  The film has adult themes and some nudity and isn’t really for younger viewers.   Definitely not one for small kids.  If young kids see this they may never want to go on the Small World again

Following Tron news has been a roller coaster lately. Figuratively and Literally!

 If you have been keeping up on Tron news lately it has been a roller coaster ride of good and bad news.  First the Good news.

It covered movies we would have loved to see that didn’t happen.   I mentioned how Tron 3 was on my list and that with Disney owning Pixar, Marvel and Star Wars—that I didn’t think Disney was going to invest in a Tron 3.    

The original Tron was at the top of my movies I would love to see a sequel for for over 20 years…and when they finally got around to it I couldn’t be happier to get back to the grid again. 

I got my first glimpse at Tron Legacy at Comic Con.  I was thrilled years ago at Comic Con when we came across the secret Flynn’s Arcade promo exhibit outside of Comic Con in Gaslamp District. The Tron Revival was just beginning.

 

Tron in the Parks

I fondly remember the old Peoplemover Tron section with the Lightcycles.   “you have escaped Tron’s Game Grid for now Users,  but take heed next time you may not fair so well”

I have wanted some type of Lightcycle ride since the 1980’s and after the short lived Rocket Rods---I thought that the old Peoplemover track would have been the perfect spot for a Tron Ride.   That ride never happened --but when Tron Legacy came out we got a Tron Legacy sneak Peek that blew me away with it's in theater effects that took you into the world of Tron.

And we got Electronica --where the Hollywood section of DCA turned into the Grid at night.   I still wish it was there.

Having waited 20 years for a sequel seeing Tron Legacy was going to be special.  We went and saw Tron Legacy at El Captain just to see the few props they had from the film and I loved it.  It was exactly how a sequel that many years later should be done. 
 Passing the torch rather than rebooting.

After seeing Tron Legacy.... I couldn't wait for more. I wanted to plug right back into the grid and that happened in the form of Tron Uprising.

Tron Uprising was an excellent animated TV Show that took us back to the grid and was meant to bridge the gap until Tron 3 came out.   I remember going to downtown Disney to catch a sneak peek of Tron Uprising –before the TV show premiered on Disney XD a great series that got buried on the channel at strange time and only lasted one season.

After Tron uprising was cancelled we waited and waited for Tron 3 news..That never came.   It was eventually put on the shelf.  Until a week after we recorded our Podcast and I declared that Tron 3 probably wouldn't happen.   News broke that  week that Tron 3 was actually going forward.   That it would start filming this fall in Vancouver Canada.     I couldn’t have been more excited.   When we did our next Podcast covering a So Bad it is Good  movie Raiders of Atlantis I was quick to share the great news that Tron 3 was indeed going forward.   

Then the roller coaster ride derailed as news came out after the movie Tomorrowland underperformed at the box office  that Tron 3 wasn’t happening again.  I was totally disappointed yet again.    No Tron 3  means no Electronica returning  the parks –which means we are stuck with the less exciting Mad T Party. 

No Tron 3 means definitely no Tron ride right.   I forgot about Tron –my hopes for it becoming a franchise crushed again.  Imagine how the guys over at the Tron Podcast must feel.

Unfortunately the coaster will be in Shanghai –so I may never get to ride it.  Let’s hope Tron 3 gets back on track at some point—because without it this cool Tron ride will probably never make it over to America.
