The latest Mickey Mouse cartoon is a throwback to the old school Goofy Sports cartoons that I love so much.   Mickey is the announcer of a basketball game that tries to give a bunch of Goofy's a lesson in good sportmanship.  The cartoon goes on to show a bunch of different sporting events through out history that demonstrates both good and bad sports behavior.  It is a nice homage to the old Goofy cartoons with several good gags, but never fully reaches the excellence of those original cartoons.  The best gag in the cartoon is the Football Goofy's touchdown celebration,

How to Swim 1942   7  out of 10

The next in the series of Goofy How to cartoons is this one from 1942.  In this cartoon Goofy learns how to swim.  He practices on a stool in his house in a stylish swim outfit that looks like pajamas  (I can't believe people used to wear stuff like that).   Goofy also learns how to change in the tight space of a beach changing room (another outdated notion).  While in the changing room a big wave crashing on the beach and Goofy oblivious to the situation exits the changing room underwater and proceeds to set up his beach gear completely clueless to.  This cartoon also features Goofy learning how to dive and attempting to go for a swim in a blown up tire.    There is an almost gracefullness to Goofy Clumsy bumbling.  His falls and crashes are like a choreographed dance. His awkard movements are elegant and display a fluidity that is a pleasure to watch.  His talents are best on display in this cartoon in his attempt at a dive that ends with him crashing into a pool with no water.

The Olympic Champ  1942  8 out of 10

It has been awhile since I visited my Goofy DVD collection --so I thought it was time to start tackling the rest of these classic cartoons.   The next  in  the "Goofy How to Series" is The Olympic Champ from 1941 --which features Goofy showing  many Track and Field events in his typical clumsy Goofy way.  Goofy is at his best while trying to run the hurdles and tumbling and bumbling his way down the track.   He is in fine form running away from his errant javelin throw tripping over everything in sight. .  As I've said many times Goofy is my favorite Disney character and when he is trying to be graceful and failing miserably --is when he is at his best.  This cartoon is definitely worth a look for any Goofy fan.

Goofy's First Love 2015  7 out of 10

 The Cartoon opens with Mickey, Donald and Goofy in a diner.  Goofy has fallen in love and Mickey and Donald decide to help him be more presentable before he asks her out.   This leads to attempts to give Goofy a makeover, get him into shape and a cameo from Scrooge McDuck.   Nothing really works, but Goofy declares that he has earned a big lesson as a result of their efforts and that is that he should just be himself.   He approaches the Goofy looking waitress to profess his love and then there is a silly plot twist at the end.   It was a solid cartoon with Goofy as the main character --but not one of my favorites featuring this lovable dog.

How to Play Baseball 1942   9 out of 10

This entry in the "Goofy How to Series" is a classic.  It starts out by explaining the sport of baseball and shows a variety of different types pitches in a funny way.  The cartoon then goes into the ultimate baseball game scenario in which it is the ninth inning of the world series. Through a series of entertaining moments the  bases get and the game (and the cartoon)  comes to an exciting conclusion as it all boils down to a close call at the plate.

The sports direction was a perfect way to go with Goofy as his tall lanky and often clumsy form lent itself perfectly for this parodies of modern sport.  The baseball cartoon was a blueprint for the many great Goofy cartoons that followed.

The Art of Self Defense 1941  7 out of 10

In this early Goofy cartoon a narrator leads us through the history of self defense with Goofy.  There are some moments that had the kids asking me to rewind it and play it again as the caveman Goofy's clubed each other over the head with clubs.  For me this was a ok Goofy cartoon in the how to series, but not a great one.  It had its moments like when Goofy is learning to box --it is a Goofy cartoon after all.

The Art of Skiing  1941   10 out of 10 

Goofy + Sports =  Perfection.    In this Goofy cartoon Goofy tries to master the Art of Skiing in his perfectly delightful Goofy way.   It is a simple concept in the How To Goofy series and works wonderfully.   Tall and lanky and very uncoordinated,  Goofy fumbles with even the simplest of instructions in stark contrast to the narration.  It is a truly wonderful little Goofy cartoon that sets the stage for many other great Goofy Sports related cartoons.  

A great example of why Goofy is my personal favorite Disney character.   All hail the Goof the master of being a clumsy buffoon.

I absolutely loved this Goofy short.  It has a story concept that someone at Pixar would come up with.  Goofy works for the railroad and has instructions to make sure that a magician's trunk makes it on the 5:30  train.  This turns out to be harder than it looks as the trunk pops open and a bunch of silly magical fun happens.  Goofy's struggles include trying to get a rabbit back into a hat and battling a kangaroo with boxing gloves.   Classic fun Goofy

Goofy's Glider  1940   8 out of 10

This 1940 Goofy's cartoon was the first of the famous How To Goofy cartoons.   In this one my favorite Disney cartoon character tries to take flight in a glider with many failed  attempts in typical Goofy fashion.   I absolutely love Goofy's spirit and determination  and his well  Goofiness.    My favorite moment in this cartoon has got to be Goofy counting to 10 before opening this parachute.  He hits the ground at 8 finishes counting then opens his shoot.   Goofy is so delightfully simple and lovable.  This format for Goofy's  cartoons would eventually lead into my favorite series of Goofy cartoons which would focus on sports.

Goofy and Wilbur  1939    7 out of 10

Goofy and Wilbur from 1939 was Goofy's first solo starring role after appearing in numerous cartoons with Mickey and Donald.   In his first solo effort Goofy and his cricket pal Wilbur go fishing.  Wilbur lures the fish into Goofy's net and actually is the focus of most the cartoon until he gets swallowed by a frog which leads Goofy on a wild chase to rescue his little friend.  The cartoon has heart in the connection and friendship between Goofy and his pal and a sense of fun as well.   A good solid first outing for my personal favorite of the Disney Fab Five.
