Disney/Pixar Animated Short Reviews: #81 Good Sports 2016 8 out of 10

Good Sports  2016  8 out of 10

The latest Mickey Mouse cartoon is a throwback to the old school Goofy Sports cartoons that I love so much.   Mickey is the announcer of a basketball game that tries to give a bunch of Goofy's a lesson in good sportmanship.  The cartoon goes on to show a bunch of different sporting events through out history that demonstrates both good and bad sports behavior.  It is a nice homage to the old Goofy cartoons with several good gags, but never fully reaches the excellence of those original cartoons.  The best gag in the cartoon is the Football Goofy's touchdown celebration,

Disney/Pixar Animated Short Reviews: #80 Split Decisions 2016 8 out of 10

Split Decision  2016  8 out of 10

Professor Von Drake is back in the latest Mickey Mouse Cartoon and he does an experiment to try and take the anger out of Donald Duck.  Of course the experiment goes wrong creating two Donalds. One Donald is a super nice huggy Donald that seems like he took some strong medication. The other is basically a Hulk version of Donald.   Donald Smash!   Chaos happens and it is delightful.   The two sides of Donald make for make for an entertaining effort in the cartoon series.

Disney/Pixar Animated Short Reviews: #79 No Reservations 2016 6 out of 10

No Reservations 2016

In the latest Minnie Mouse Cartoon we go deep into the subject of discrimination.  Minnie and the gals have reservations for a fancy Space Needle Restaurant.   This is a high class joint and apparently Daisy, Minnie and Clara Belle aren't welcome.  Deep stuff for a Minnie Mouse cartoon.  The  Maitre D takes on look at the gals and their simple farm style outfits and completely ignores the fact that Minnie actually does have reservation.  The gals spend the rest of the cartoon trying to sneak into the restaurant which leads to some silly and weird moments including Clara Belle being stuck in the roof and spraying milk all over the customers.   It was an okay cartoon with several gags, but not one of the better of the series.   If one looks deep enough into the plot it has a stronger message about class struggle and could represent revolution of the struggling masses against the elitist rich.

The cartoon can be found on the Disney Channel and Disney Online.

Disney/Pixar Animated Short Reviews: #78 Entombed 2016 9 out of 10

Entombed  2016   9 out of 10

Mickey and Minnie go on an adventure in the one of the latest cartoon in the new Mickey Mouse cartoon series.  This cartoon is an action packed Indiana Jones style fun house ride.  Minnie ends up stumbling into the Treasure Room right off the bat like Daphne in Scooby Doo. She then proceeds to set off a bunch of booby traps that Mickey must negotiate in his search to find her and the treasure.   It is a fun action packed cartoon from start to finish.  The visuals inside the tomb brought me back to Raiders of the Lost Ark and the traps Mickey had to deal with were great.  At times it felt like the game Dragon's Lair with Mickey barely avoiding each trap.

The cartoon can be found on the Disney Channel and Disney Online.

Disney/Pixar Animated Short Reviews: #77 Ku'u Lei Melody 2016 9 out of 10

 Ku'u Lei Melody 2016  9 out of 10

I absolutely loved this cartoon.   Mickey is trying to compose the perfect melody on a Uke and has been inspired by on island spirit in the form of Minnie Mouse.  The animation is superb.  It is the perfect mix of Tiki and Mickey.   Surfer Goofy and Donald interrupt Mickey.   They all end up searching for his melody in an ancient Tiki area that brings forth some cool Tiki Room references.  Mickey eventually finds Minnie and his tune.

Here is a picture for Mickey, Goofy and Donald walking past some Tiki room Totems.

One of the only things I like as much as Disney is Tiki Stuff so this episode grabbed my attention on so many levels.

Mickey ends up connnecting with Minnie and the end of the episode and finding the mystery melody he was searching for.
This episode captured everything I love about the current Mickey cartoon series.  It featured the big 3 and had some adventures humor and fun.

Disney/Pixar Animated Short Reviews: #76 Turkish Delights 2016 5 out of 10

Turkish Delights  2016  5 out of 10

In the latest Mickey Mouse cartoon Mickey is a food vendor in Turkey trying to sell his treats on the streets.   Turkish versions of Goofy and Donald (wearing mustaches) are annoyed that Mickey is stealing their business and a battle occurs. Usually when the cartoons feature Goofy and Donald Duck it increases the likability of the cartoons.   This cartoon falls kind of flat.  The sight gags aren't especially funny and as I've mentioned before the attempts at the international cartoons are generally the least interesting ones to me.  I think the characters are better when they are themselves instead of some weird international versions of themselves.   I'd much rather see Mickey and Donald trying to take Goofy to Potatoland than watch mustached  Goofy and Donald fight with Mickey over vending space in Turkey.   When they let the characters be themselves --they tend to shine more.

The cartoon can be found on the Disney Channel or Disney Online

Disney/Pixar Animated Short Reviews: #75 Sock Burglar 2016 7 out of 10

                                Sock  Burglar  2016  7 out of 10

In the latest cartoon in the Mickey Mouse cartoon series -there is someone in town that is stealing everybody's socks.   Minnie Mouse is the star of this cartoon.  She decides to investigate and shows off her detective skills.   She questions some known criminals which gives the cartoon a chance to throw in some cool cartoon cameos including the Phantom Blot and the Big Bad Wolf to name a couple.   Then Minnie gets into the action with some Ninja moves to take down the criminal using some animated sock yarn as a trap.   It was a short cartoon that packed in some good action and a few laughs.

It can be found on Disney Online or the Disney Channel.

Disney/Pixar Animated Short Reviews: #74 Dancevidaniya 2016 8 out of 10

DanceVidaniya 2016 8 out of 10

In the latest Mickey Mouse cartoon we head to Russia for some Russian Folk dancing.  Peg Leg Pete co-stars as a Russian dancer that as usual tries to steal Minnie away from Mickey Mouse.  This of course leads to a dance battle.  The Russian music and dancing work well together in this nearly wordless episode.  The dance battle was  visually entertaining as Mickey fights his way through the Russian dancers to save Minnie.

Disney/Pixar Animated Short Reviews: #73 Roughin It 8 out of 10 2016

Roughin It  2016 8 out of 10

Donald, Goofy and Mickey together again.  The cartoons that feature all three of them in main roles are always my favorite episodes.  In this latest adventure they go camping.

Mickey wants and old time camping experience. Donald has a completely different experience in mind.    Donald pulls up in his giant state of the art RV that brings the home to the forest.  While Donald and Goofy enjoy the luxury of the RV, Mickey ends up literally battling nature as he is mauled several times by the woodland creatures like a scene out of Revenant.   Eventually the Monster RV goes haywire and tries to pull a Thelma and Louise --and Mickey has to rescue them.

Like I mentioned before the cartoons that include Donald and Goofy tend to be the best in the series and this was no different.

Disney/Pixar Animated Short Reviews: #71 No 2016 6 out of 10

NO 2016  6 out of 10

Mickey Mouse is always so nice and polite.  He just can't say no to anything or anyone's request for help.   After being taken advantage of one too many times he finally learns to say "NO" with Donald's help.   This new found word is at first freeing to Mickey---but then everything goes wrong.  It is a simple cartoon -- some of the gags are entertaining like Goofy borrowing Mickey's chair for "Charity"  Mickey learns the lesson that he shouldn't be a total pushover, but that it still pays to be a nice guy in the end.

Disney/Pixar Animated Short Reviews: #70 Road Hogs 2015 5 out of 10

Road Hogs 2015  5 out of 10

Mickey and Minnie are taking a pleasant scooter ride up the coast and decide to stop at what turns out to be a biker bar for milkshakes.   This wasn't one of my favorites in the series.   Mickey's scooter does the biker bar trope of knocking over all of the biker gangs bikes.  The bikers which area bunch of dirty looking pigs "Road Hogs". They are showing plumbers cracks which seemed a little inappropriate  for a Mickey cartoon.  They also kidnap Minnie while Mickey is trying to make up the bike incident with Milkshakes, which was a little odd.  This episode just wasn't as funny as most of the episodes in the series.  Mickey has to ride off to save Minnie from the bikers and ends up saving the main "Road Hog" as well and they all ride off into the sunset.   It was just a dull entry in the Mickey Mouse cartoon series.

Disney/Pixar Animated Short Reviews: #72 Couple's Sweater 2016 9 out of 10

Couple's Sweater   2016  9 out of 10

This one should be called Mickey Mouse and the Sweater of Doom.  Minnie wants Mickey to wear this couple's sweater that look like a cactus.  The sweater is so itchy that Mickey starts to look like an episode of Ren and Stimpy.  He is so uncomfortable that all he can think about is getting out of the terrible thing.
He wants to eat fast since he just has to get out of this awful sweater.  The waiter at the fine dining restaurant brings them both a plate of food that is fit for Shaggy and Scooby Doo.    Mickey engulfs it like vacuum.  The cartoon has some great sight gags including itchy sweater dancing where he uses Minnie like a log to itch his back.  The best part is when he goes on the Ferris Wheel and has a nightmare sequence that is a nod to the scene in Fantasia where he battles the brooms.

Disney/Pixar Animated Short Reviews: #69 Feliz Cumpleanos 2015 7 out of 10

Feliz Cumpleanos  2015  7 out of 10

This Mickey Mouse cartoon is one of the around the world style cartoons.    It features a Mexican Mickey Mouse celebrating his birthday when a bunch of rogue pinatas decided to attack.
It reminded me of El Guapo from Three Amigos.   Mickey must do battle with a pink donkey pinata and his gang.   Mickey takes a beating at first but after being smashed face first into his cake he musters up the energy to take on the pinatas in a flurry of action.  The action is like something out of Samurai Jack as Mickey Dispatches with the villainous Pinata gang.  This cartoon is less about the gags and more about the action sequences.

The cartoon includes Goofy singing and a cameo by the Three Cabelleros playing music.

You can check it out on Disney Online or the Disney Channel.

Disney/Pixar Animated Short Reviews: #68 Shifting Gears 2015 7 out of 10

Shifting Gears   2015 7 out of 10

In one of the latest Mickey Mouse cartoons Mickey gets into a battle of wills with his car.   Mickey wants to go for a drive and mentions a bunch of places that his car is excited about and then finally decides he wants to go to the beach.  His car wants nothing to do with that and they end up battling over where to go.
The car in this cartoon is like a person instead of just a vehicle (think the cab from Roger Rabbit).  Mickey tries several different thing to trick the car that is refusing to take him including dressing up like Minnie and baking the car a nuts and bolts pie.   It is an odd cartoon, but enjoyable for its sight gags and has a satisfying ending for both Mickey and his car.

Disney/Pixar Animated Short Reviews: #67 Wonders of the Deep 2015 9+ out of 10

Wonders of the Deep   2015 9+ out of 10

One of the latest Mickey Mouse cartoons really hit home for me. This cartoon stars the big three Mickey, Goofy and Donald and features a guest appearance Professor Ludwig Von Drake.  This cartoon features the gang on a Submarine Voyage (which hits home because when I worked at Disneyland I was a Submarine Voyage Captain).  The Professor takes them on a Voyage into the Deep Blue and all they see is a guppy at first until Mickey wants to go deeper to see the real mysteries of the deep.  And see the Mysteries of the Deep they do...This cartoon brings out the best of each cartoon as they search the deep ocean for mysteries .  We get to see Mickey's wide eyed wonderment.  We get to see Goofy --be well Goofy and Donald has one of his  classic temper tantrums.   The Professor gets accidentally ejected into the ocean and is swallowed by a Giant Clam.  Mickey and Donald go out to rescue him while Goofy messes with the equipment on the Sub.   Mickey and Donald think they encounter some Mermaids --but it turns out they were just hallucinations do to lack of oxygen.  Instead of Mermaids they find themselves face to face with a Kracken.   The cartoon was nearly perfect and had everything you could want in a Mickey cartoon.    I loved this cartoon.  Partly because of it's connection to the Submarine Voyage which I used to spend 8 hours a day driving around the lagoon.  I loved it mostly because of the fact that it gave all three Disney Stars a moment to shine like the old Mickey, Goofy and Donald cartoons.

This cartoon short was about 7 minutes...Twice as long as most of the cartoons in the series..

Disney/Pixar Animated Short Reviews: #66 Movie Time 2015 6 out of 10

Movie Time 2015   6 out of 10

In the latest Mickey Mouse cartoon --Mickey Mouse braves the storm of the century in search of snacks for movie time.  This wasn't one of the better cartoons in the series.  Mickey basically ignores the storm warning -because movie time without snacks is unthinkable.  The storm rages on as he blindly wanders through the streets with the wind blowing other animals past him.  The cartoon relies on the man focused on his task unaware of the wacky things happening around him concept.  He gets to the store and is trying to pick out a bag of chips as the storm rages on.  Finally he realizes how bad the storm is as it levels the building he is in his the shop owner and then he tries to rescue Minnie --getting electrocuted several times in the attempt.  It was a decent cartoon with several okay sight gags --but it just didn't rise to the level of many of the cartoons in the series.

Disney/Pixar Animated Short Reviews: #61 Lava 2014 9 out of 10

Lava 2014   9 out of 10

This computer animated cartoon short by Pixar accompanied Inside Out in the theaters.  It was a simple and sweet cartoon.  It is basically a love poem/song about a lonely volcano/island searching for someone to love.  As life goes along around him he dreams of and sings about having a love of his own as he slowly sinks into the ocean.  It is an emotional film.  Pixar is able to capture the emotions of this volcano as he slowly sinks.  He sings his song one last time (still hopeful- but with saddness in his heart).  Finally a new volcano rises just as he sinks below the surface.  The problem is this island is facing away from him when it surfaces and can't see him. The new volcano all alone starting singing his song back to him as he fades away.

The song in this short is excellent.  It is so simple and so sweet and when you get to the end I dare you not to feel some emotion.  This short was a perfect companion piece for Inside Out and sets the mood for the emotional ride that is Inside Out.

Disney/Pixar Animated Short Reviews: #59 A Flower for Minnie 2015 9 out of 10

A Flower for Minnie  2015   9 out of 10

I haven't seen Mickey take this bad of a beating ever.
This latest Mickey Mouse Cartoon finds Mickey in search of a simple flower to give to his love Minnie.  His first flower gets ruined and his search for a replacement leaves him beaten to a pulp. Mickey takes a whopping that revivals an Itchy and Scratchy cartoon.. and here is some of the ways he is comically brutalized:

1.  He is pummelled by bees
2.  Gets into a brutal tug of war with Goofy who mistakes him for a garden mole
3.  Booted from a funeral
4.  Rammed by a goat
5.  Eaten by a man eating plant
6 . Kicked by a muscle bound beach guy

All of this is worth it to Mickey in the end because his persistence pays off and he finally gets a flower and a kiss from Minnie.   This was a very violent cartoon --(but hey so was every Tom and Jerry cartoon --ever  --which inspired the Itchy and Scratchy cartoons I compared this too)   This was a funny one and I'm sure the kids will enjoy it as well.

It can be found on Disney Online or the Disney Channel.

Disney/Pixar Animated Short Reviews: #58 Bronco Busted 2015 7 out of 10

Bronco Busted 2015  7 out of 10

In Bronco Busted  Mickey and the gang have their car breakdown in the middle of the country and the only way to get it fixed is to win a local rodeo.  The attempt to get a wild horse in order to entry the rodeo and go through a series of silly failed attempts to secure one.  Then Mickey notices how wild with angry Donald Duck gets and rides him in the rodeo instead.   He wins the contest only to find out that there is no prize money this year.   Then a silly surprise twist of fate happens at the end that you will have to watch for yourself to find out.   It was a good Mickey Cartoon in the series but not one of the best. I love it whenever they have all three characters on screen together --but this idea seemed a rehash of the Dog contest short where they passed Goofy off as Pluto.

Disney/Pixar Animated Short Reviews: #57 Al Rojo Vivo 2015 9 out of 10

Al Rojo Vivo   2015  8 out of 10

In the latest of the new Mickey Mouse Cartoons Mickey literally gets red with angry after facing a rude bully (Pete) while trying to watch the running of the bulls with Minnie.   Red is theme here as a bull focuses in on Mickey and sends him on an action packed chase through the streets of Spain.  Mickey is running for his life and while trying to shed everything red.  It works briefly until he and the bull chasing with get bombarded by tomatoes at the neighboring tomato throwing festival.  This twist sends both Mickey and the bull running from the other bulls in a spirited and run cartoon.  Mickey uses his smarts to eventually turn the tables on his bully in the end in a satisfying conclusion

This cartoon brought back memories of an old Goofy cartoon that I will have to look up and watch again soon.

As usual these Cartoons can be found on Disney Online and the Disney Channel.
